Gems can be inserted in socketed items to give the item magical properties. |
|
Once a gem has been inserted into an item, it cannot be removed. |
|
An inserted gem will not be affected by a Gem Shrine. |
|
There are five grades of gems: chipped, flawed, normal, flawless, and perfect. |
|
There are seven types of gems: amethyst, diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz, and skull. |
|
The first gem inserted into an item will determine the color of the item. |
|
Gems are only available from vendors in town, if a character in a multiplayer game has sold a gem to that vendor. |
|
If different type of gems are inserted into a weapon, the attack displayed will randomly vary between the affects caused by the gem, even though the weapon will be attacking with all the effects given it by the gems at the same time. |

Classic DII
- only Helms, Shields, and Weapons can be socketed
- the maximum number of sockets that a helm can have is 2
- the maximum number of sockets that shields and weapons can have is 3 |
|
Expansion DII
- Helms, Shields, Weapons, and Armor can be socketed
- helms, armor and shields can have 1-4 sockets
- weapons can have 1-6 sockets |
